Close listening is not noticing everything at once. It is asking the same music three different questions.
- First, remember the body before analysing.
- Second, map beginnings, turns, and returns.
- Third, follow one quiet change all the way through.
From body to structure
On the first pass, put the screen down and notice when your head moves, tension rises, or attention drifts—without judging it.
On the second, mark entrances, empty drops in energy, and the return of earlier material. Apparent repetition begins to show an architecture.
Only one small change
For the third, ignore the loudest kick or melody. Follow a faint noise, a lengthening reverb tail, or a hi-hat that shifts every few beats.
This is not a test. It demonstrates how moving attention can open several versions of the same music.
